Writing about food and food photography

I don’t know how it is for you, but for me writing about food takes time and patience. Preparing a post means more than writing in WordPress and adding photos. I wrote most of my post on paper. Inspiration came when I was not in front of the computer, so a pen and paper were best. Now I always have on me or around the house pen and paper. I don’t write on my phone because it takes more time than writing on the paper, but this is just me. Do what is comfortable for you, not others.

I have a huge list of future recipes with great photos, but all those photos need to be resizes  otherwise even my Premium Plan on WordPress will not be enough. I get them ready before adding to the post. I want that all my photos make you feel hungry or sending you to the kitchen to cook something. This is what food photography should be.

When I make a new recipe I have a paper and a pen and write down the steps. This I learned after I took a few photos and I didn’t write down the recipe and I couldn’t write about the recipe.

Another step is correcting my English. I am from Romania and English is not my first language so I need to copy from the paper in Word and then correct the mistakes. It takes time. I lived in London for a few years and worked there with a guy who studied at Oxford. He taught me a proper UK English because I used to write and it needed to be correct.

After a few years I moved and worked for a USA company and traveled a lot in USA. Then I had to readapt my English. There was a very good thing from all this experience. I got to understand better people talking English not matter the country they were coming. Not all of them, but some of them.

So, now, I am living in Romania with my family so I don’t get to use very often my English and writing on this blog is also a way to stay connected. You forget a language if you don’t use it very often.

After the writing is done and is corrected, photos are prepared I can assemble the post in WordPress.

All this process is great and I enjoy every single part of it. I noticed that the blog is getting more personal and I start to like it even more. I hope you do to.

  3. Wow! I love ur blog! For my part, I hate writing the recipes, I only like to take photos and write about my own stuff. But I enjoy cooking, so I try to do it every once in a while. 😉

  7. I don’t write all of my posts on paper, but I always have pen and paper on me just in case inspiration strikes. I just recently read in Joan Didion’s book “that the ability to make a note when something came to mind was the difference between being able to write and not being able to write.” I find that to be so true!

    When I cook, I tend to not measure anything out and am guided by my instincts. But, if I’m making something to share on my website, I have to write everything down on paper. Otherwise, I’ll forget how much of each thing I added. Like you, I also put quite a bit of time and effort into each of the pieces that I post on my site.

  13. Food bloggers not only write about their content but they also have to create a visual of that content. This in turn takes more time and preparation but the outcome is very rewarding, at least for me.

  14. I write my recipes and ideas all out on paper also! I throw my recipes together in the heat of the moment so if I don’t right them down, I tend to forget what I used.

  38. I, too, must write out my words on paper before transferring to my laptop. It is an added step, but one I enjoy immensely. For me, writing is quite pleasurable, but there’s also that slight element of work and editing. Thanks for putting in that extra effort for your readers!

  39. I love this piece! I have only just started writing about food and you’re right it’s so hard! I never thought it would be so difficult as I love writing and I love food. English is my first language but yet I still struggle, however your posts great! Don’t worry about the language anyway, beauty of blogging is that it’s words from your heart. Happy blogging!

    A well-travelled Romanian cook, photographer, explorer, traveller, multi-linguist wordsmith. Thank goodness your beautiful blogs are in English because here in England most of us are very lazy at learning foreign languages, let alone writing blogs in a language that is not one first. Yes, of course there are some English people who speak more than one or two foreign tongues but they are few and far between!

  50. Hello, Thank you for visiting and liking my garlicky post, I appreciate it! It was interesting to read about your personal way of composing your posts. For me, the writing comes last. I take the pictures first, edit them, then write “around” them. I do that for my travel blog as well. My pictures are the scaffolding, the backbone of my stories. And we both write in a foreign language, we have that in common 😁
