Writing about food and food photography

I don’t know how it is for you, but for me writing about food takes time and patience. Preparing a post means more than writing in WordPress and adding photos. I wrote most of my post on paper. Inspiration came when I was not in front of the computer, so a pen and paper were best. Now I always have on me or around the house pen and paper. I don’t write on my phone because it takes more time than writing on the paper, but this is just me. Do what is comfortable for you, not others.

I have a huge list of future recipes with great photos, but all those photos need to be resizes  otherwise even my Premium Plan on WordPress will not be enough. I get them ready before adding to the post. I want that all my photos make you feel hungry or sending you to the kitchen to cook something. This is what food photography should be.

When I make a new recipe I have a paper and a pen and write down the steps. This I learned after I took a few photos and I didn’t write down the recipe and I couldn’t write about the recipe.

Another step is correcting my English. I am from Romania and English is not my first language so I need to copy from the paper in Word and then correct the mistakes. It takes time. I lived in London for a few years and worked there with a guy who studied at Oxford. He taught me a proper UK English because I used to write and it needed to be correct.

After a few years I moved and worked for a USA company and traveled a lot in USA. Then I had to readapt my English. There was a very good thing from all this experience. I got to understand better people talking English not matter the country they were coming. Not all of them, but some of them.

So, now, I am living in Romania with my family so I don’t get to use very often my English and writing on this blog is also a way to stay connected. You forget a language if you don’t use it very often.

After the writing is done and is corrected, photos are prepared I can assemble the post in WordPress.

All this process is great and I enjoy every single part of it. I noticed that the blog is getting more personal and I start to like it even more. I hope you do to.

  1. Writing about food would make me constantly hungry. Until you enjoy, you do it right, simple. Do we make mistakes? Hell yeah. I’m proofreading my articles too, and it still happens sometimes, discovering something to correct after posting. But this isn’t Twitter, we can edit here.

  2. Congratulations you do a great job! I too prepare future blog ideas and am constantly writing reminder notes every day. I carry notebooks everywhere. 👏

    1. Omg I do the same thing too, one thing I find helpful is taking pictures immediately I see inspiration and starting blog post drafts with pictures and then go back later to update.

  3. I totally agree that it takes a lot of time to produce one post! Especially the photos though. I didn’t resize them..Should do it more often. Sigh.. But you did a great job. It is a wonderful blog!

  4. I find that I’m a tinkerer with my posts. I write them into my phone over the course of a couple of days usually. I’m often working on more than one post at a time so I flit between one and another. I get my wife to proof read for me as her grasp on grammar is a little better than mine and it’s always good to get someone else to read your work before you publish.

  5. I bring a notebook every where I go just in case I get inspired to write a post. Like you, I like to write things out on paper before typing them up. Best way to catch mistakes and edit I think! Keep up the great work, your photos always make me hungry!

  6. Yes I also know how much effort goes in to writing a recipe blog or book and you do a lovely job. And don’t worry about the language, it’s the soul of the piece that matters.

  7. I so agree with you. I am considering Lightroom to assist. I too have “trapped photos” on my hard-drive that need attention, but I am also blogging lifestyle so that takes a few good hours too. Need to organize. But like you I really love the finished results.

  8. The writing element is definitely one of the hardest parts. Like you I have a large list of dishes I’d like to try but for some reason, my motivation is at rock bottom which is making getting any posts written hard as the whole act of cooking/eating feels like a chore almost as if food is just fuel at the moment opposed to a form of enjoyment as it once was.

    Like you all my posts are written sometimes several times by hand before I transfer them to WordPress as I feel there are very few distractions with pen and paper plus because my kitchen notebook contains waterproof paper I often got a large chunk of the posts written while I was cooking.

  10. I SO enjoy your posts and especially your beautiful photos – these do make me hungry:) I can relate to the mistakes, I rewrite my posts constantly and still find mistakes after posting! It’s a learning process for sure, but how fun!! 🙂

  11. I’m in the same situation than you, writing about food in English rather than my birth language.
    I know how hard it is sometimes (especially not finding the right way of saying something, when you know exactly what you want to say in the other language)! But it is such a great exercice, and everything works out when it’s done with passion!

  12. You are so right! I started following your blog recently and I am loving all your posts and photographs. I am very new to blogging and a lot of times I struggle. I get stuck somewhere and do not know how to proceed and tend to take long breaks from writing. I am learning and it’s a beautiful process! I write down ideas whenever I’m inspired wherever I am and I write down on my mobile, but I love writing with a pen and paper too!

  13. I’ve started writing a lot of my posts by hand because my son needs my computer for school. I find it gets my mind working in an entirely different way – I love it!
    And those photos look delicious.

I am excited when I manage to get a recipe written down and a pic made for my own blog- add in speaking another language? Nope, dont think so – LOL Thanks for all your hard work 🙂

  16. Your English is amazing, dear. And that’s the great thing about English, really: There are so many different regional and national dialects that in the end it doesn’t matter how you say it- nor matter whether or not it’s technically correct- as long as they can understand you in the end.

  17. I think you’re doing great and your English seems fine to me! 🙂 Writing about food and taking photos does take time and patience. I’ve been sitting on a recipe for a few months and finally got around to making it. The funny thing is, the original in the recipe doesn’t look like my finished product, but that’s okay! That’s also the beauty of recipes and cooking! You adapt (as you do with your English) – and make it your own! Hey, my potato soup may not have looked all that appealing, but it tasted wonderful! 🙂

  22. Great post! I love to hear how other people form theirs. For example, I can’t write on paper very well, or on my phone. I have to be in front of my computer. I like to see the words form and how they balance, and also my typing speed is so much higher on a keyboard!!!

  23. Yeah, you’re right! Writing your blog in English is one of the best ways to stay connected when you don’t study or use it daily anymore. I do the same. 🙂 and don’t worry about mistakes, even english-speaking people do lots of them, we all do.

  25. YES! Pen and paper are must-haves. I now take a notebook with me everywhere. Most of my ideas come to me in the car, so I have learned to pull over and write them down. It probably makes me a better driver 🙂 In the USA, we like our articles/ determiners. For instance, in P5 we would say …… traveled a lot in the USA, and…. country they were coming from. Thank you for writing this article, it was enjoyable to read. Your photographs are lovely!

  26. I am new to blogging and am still trying to find my rhythm but like you have lots of lists and am spending time trying to plan and sort myself out. I love your photos. And great on you for practicing your English in this format. I am just learning another language and can’t even imagine writing my posts in another language

  27. I do the same. I need to at least start a draft (and at times several drafts) on paper before I can pop it on the computer. Same way, I love writing down the recipes by hand too. Everything just flows better from ink to paper.
    This has also given me an idea on blogging about my process of writing up a food blog post! Would you mind if I do it?

  28. Thank you for posting honest stories about how and why you do what you do, do not worry about you English, in this old country boys opinion it’s ‘perfect enough’. Keep writing and keep photographing, it’s an enjoyable read for new comers like Peach and I.
