Food Allergy Awareness Month

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month in Canada

Food allergy is one of the leading causes of potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions and a growing public health concern in Canada, especially among children.

Imagine being the only kid at a birthday party who can’t eat any cake because the ingredients in it could cause a fatal allergic reaction.

Allergy Awareness Month helps kids without allergies (and their parents) understand what their peers are going through.

Each of us should work in our own way to raise awareness of food allergies and anaphylaxis.

  1. Awareness is important especially in restaurants when the staff gives you a blank stare, when you tell them to leave out certain ingredients because of an allergy. Great post!

  2. Thanks for posting this! I’m just beginning a blog about my challenges with having such a drastic dietary change and im thankful everyday that I listened to my body.

  3. Food allergies are very real and very scary! One day we made a cake to share with neighbors and one of the moms refused because of her son’s severe food allergies. He was afraid that if she had some and then later kissed him good night that she could make him have a reaction. I’ll never forget it. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I have an allergy to gluten and it’s pretty hard sometimes. For example, today I was at a barbeque and usually I wrap my burgers in lettuce but there wasn’t any available. The problem is when you feel weird or left out for not eating like everybody else. Nobody likes that.

  5. Great post. I wish more people could be more sensitive about food allergies.
My mom gets very ill if there is ANY dairy in food. I feel bad cause she doesn’t want to be difficult, yet the waiter needs to know. Usually she is accommodated and there isn’t an issue. But other times the entire meal is held up so they can make her something else. Cancer sucks. She was allergy free before she got ill.

  6. I used to be allergic to so many foods. It has gotten better with some good lifestyle changes. But thanks for highlighting the importance of awareness. And thanks for liking my blog 🙂
