My father loved going fishing. It was a great way to relax and enjoy nature. He will also clean the fish and cook it. He used to make a mean fish stew. A few days ago, me and my mom, tried to make a fish stew with my dad recipe. Anyway, what my mom remembers.
My neighbor brought fresh fish and my husband said he is gone clean the fish as long I can cook it. I hate to clean the fish. So imagine my husband, on the edge of a small creek near our house, cleaning the fish. In 1 hour all the cats in the neighborhood were enjoying a show waiting for food.
We didn’t have a recipe with quantities, so we put it the way we felt is balancing the fish. My mom always cooks like that and her food is great.
- Fresh fish
- Fennel seeds
- Garlic gloves
- Fresh tomatoes or tomato juice
- Vegetable or fish stock
Heat the oil in a large pan and then add fennel seeds, carrots, celery and garlic all chopped and then cook for 5 minutes until is starting to soften. Add the leeks, tomatoes and stock and bring to boil. Add the fish and vinegar. Vinegar will soften the fish bones. We used small fish so we left the bones.
You need to let it simmer for 2 hours minim, so the bones are soft. If you use big fish without bones you don’t need to simmer so much.
Ladle into bowl and serve with a spoon and it goes great with our Romanian “mamaliga”. Decorate with lemon and fresh parsley. Enjoy!

Delicious! Is always difficult for me to give quantities too…I always trust my eyes 🙂
There is really nothing better than freshly caught, and prepared fish!
Looks GREAT ! – thank-you. 🙂
And serving it with polenta is a marvellous idea. Yum !!!
I like the concept of the recipes with only ingredients and no quantities. I do the same thing when I post soup recipes 😊
I love recipes that come with memories attached. And I didn’t know that about vinegar!
Sounds delicious… thank you and look forward to trying..
This is a visual delight
🙂 I love the idea of cat practically waiting in line.
I like fish stew! The version I learned includes pasta, so it’s a great one-dish meal.
Fish stew would lovely- it is wet and cold!

Make me want to try it.
Lovely Recipe 😍
Tantalizing, Gabi! Thick and hearty – perfect for October. A blanket to warm against the chill.
It looks delicious. The tomatoes in it make me think of French bouillabaise. Is it based on bouillabaise?
What is bouillabaisse?
It’s a fish and shellfish stew from southern France.
Sounds great! I will check it.

Delicious .. I’ve never cooked fish stew and this sounds good. But we do make fish curry 🙂
This dish is so amazing. I love how you talk about your husband cleaning the fish and the cats wanting to eat I think that adds a little laughter to the blog. And you give a list to the ingredients and I think that is great because I would love to try and make this on my own.
Mmm… sounds great, I will definitely have to give this a try. I love a good fish dish
