Food inspiration: Movies

You know the feeling when you watch a movie about food or with people eating amazing food? I would like to have this feeling all day long because  I love this feeling. I am always making something to eat when I am about to see food movies. They are a an amazing source of inspiration for all of us.

I have some movies that I love to watch, even more than once.

  1. Ratatouille – “Anyone can cook” is what makes me go in the kitchen. Don’t think that I want to be a great chef and have my own restaurant. No. I just want to cook healthy, unique plates and take photos of them. J
  2. The Hundred-Foot Journey – I love Helen Mirren. The combination of Indian food (I got lucky once and tried it) and French cuisine is amazing. Something different, which makes me go in the kitchen and start cooking.
  3. Big night (1996) – The idea that a great chef is not gone squander his talent on making the routine dishes that customers expect is what cooking is about. When you are great you need to be great all the time. Timpano – A huge, round “drum” of pasta, filled with even more pasta, meatballs, sausage, pork shank, and hard-boiled eggs. I would love to be at that table once a month. J
  4. A good year – Yummy!! Russell Crowe yummy! J This is more about wine that cooking. But amazing landscapes plus love the old mansion. I imagine were to shoot and what shoot.
  5. Julie & Julia – Meryl Streep’s acting is, of course, superb. Amy Adams is also wonderfu The idea of cooking so many recipes in a year from a book is challenging.
  6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – I always have chocolate with me when I see this movie.
  7. My Big Fat Greek Wedding – Makes me go to Greece and eat as much as I can.
  8. Burnt – I love the speed and the stress in that kitchen. I don’t think I could do it, but I imagine being there.
  9. Feed the beast – There are so many scenes with food that makes me go in the kitchen and mix something up. Just look in the fridge and combine the ingredients you have and hope for something good.

I have a long list to go, but so far I can tell you that I was not so impressed with Sideways. Maybe if I knew more about wine, it will be better.

I can add here some recipes:

  • Lady and the tramp – Spaghetti and Meatballs
  • Bridget Jones’s Diary – Potato Leek Soup
  • Waitress – Chocolate – Caramel Cream Pie
  • Goodfellas – Meat sauce
  • When Harry Met Sally – Apple Pie
  • Casablanca – Champagne Cocktail

So inspiration is everywhere. You just need to find it. Hope you liked my list. I have still a lot of movies to see, but till next time let me know which one you liked and which one to see.

Update: After I wrote this post I felt inspired and went in the kitchen and made  spaghetti Carbonara.

    1. Chef was a great movie it really bought the vibrancy of Cuban food to life. i enjoyed the cultural adventure it provided through soundtrack and colorful foods.

  1. Babette’s Feast, Chocolat, and although this is not necessarily a food movie, the scene in 9 1/2 Weeks where he feeds her and it ends up in a food fight/lovemaking session. And another was the scene in Enchanted April, when they are eating their lunch and Miranda Richardson’s character can’t figure out how to eat her pasta and she has spaghetti sauce smeared all over her mouth. Too funny. Just a few of my favorites. This was an excellent post!

  2. I miss that high-speed kitchen environment sometimes (it’s a good job for people with ADHD lol…I can’t wait to see Burnt, and I liked Julie & Julia… (Also, Chocolat is one of my favs)

  3. I missed The 100 foot Journey in theaters. Thanks for rminding me I need to get this movie, I too think Helen Mirren is great. Additionally, I grew up on French cooking but love Indian food.

  4. My favourite food movie will always be Tampopo about a Japanese woman who wants to make good ramen noodles to serve in her restaurant and her adventures with various people to learn. And then, of course, there’s The Ramen Girl. 🙂

  5. Great point! I even find inspiration in food commercials. It’s like – yum, that LOOKS AMAZING! So I go look up the recipe and try it!

      1. I’ve seen all of them, and I do like the ’40s version, but you just can’t beat the ’90s version! So much good food in that one!

      2. I agree. The book is amazing as well. There’s a scene in the book, from what I remember of it, where the girls put on a play for their family and friends, and Mr Laurence sends over vanilla and strawberry ice creams for them to have afterwards. I think it’s time for a re-read.

  6. I cry when Antoin Ego has that flashback memory of eating ratatouille. Food really does that, and I feel like any cook would want their food to do that to someone else. It’s a very powerful and under appreciated thing!

One of my favourite food movies besides Ratatouille is Chocolat. Ohhh that movie! The food scenes really do something for me, particularly that scene when they make a whole feast for Armande Voisin.

  7. Ah yes, Julie and Julia. The film that got me into blogging. And reintroduced to cooking. 🙂

Ah, the spaghetti and meatballs scene in Lady and the Tramp. I’d love a date to be that romantic.

  8. Love this list and feel the same way! Always wanted the green salad from When Harry Met Sally, pizza from Mystic Pizza, hot chocolate from Chocolat and the big kahuna burger from Pulp Fiction

  9. This is so controversial but…I really could not get into Ratatouille. I watched it with friends and I was the person who kept saying “GUYS A RAT IS COOKING THAT IS DISGUSTING”. I could not suspend my ick for a cartoon rat. The scene where all the rats cooked together squicked me. And I kept being told “they’re washing their hands!” and I was all “ARE THEY WASHING OFF THEIR PLAGUE ARE THEY ARE THEY??”

    Ahem.

I really enjoyed Julie and Julia! And that Lady and the Tramp scene is just iconic…

  10. Typo “anyone ca cook” in the Ratatouille description. As a fellow blogger, I’m always amazed at my own typos, and I make them in six different languages…and some of them may have helped heighten international tensions…

  11. I love this list! There are some great movies on here. I’m so glad you decided to include Ratatouille. 🙂

  12. Love a good food movie. I’m actually amazed that I have seen all except Hundred Foot Journey, which is on my list. I’m with you, all these make me hungry! -Kat

  13. Love, love, love food movies! They always get me so inspired. ‘Chef’ is another good movie, just about honest food and fun.

  14. What about books? Many of Brian Jacques’ Redwall books have a lot of foods described in there– in fact, if there are any Redwall books where there is not a feast of some sort with several of the foods mentioned full with a description of just how delicious they are and how this food goes with that food and how the rabbits are stuffing their faces… I would be quite surprised. lol. If you’ve never read Redwall, I recommend the series. Also, my brother mentioned that apparently there’s actually a Redwall cookbook so you can actually make some of those delicious sounding foods. Apparently. I have yet to actually look that up…

  15. Awesome list! Some of these movies I’ve never heard of so thanks for putting them on here, I’ll have to look them up later. Also thanks for stopping by my blog. Your blog is phenomenal I could stay and get lost here forever. 🙂

  16. You are an AWESOME cook! I’m not nearly as great as you! Oh and thanks for stopping by my blog. I appreciate the like! 🙂

  17. Great list – I’d have to add ‘Chef’ to it though…gosh I loved that film so much as it was incredibly entertaining to watch plus the food? Oh my gawd, I have made that pasta and those grilled cheese sandwiches so many times since!

  18. I love “Babette’s Feast,” too, partly because it is about the power of good food and wine to soften hearts and reconcile old enemies. Also “A true artist is never poor.”
