Apple rolls

apple rolls

Great dessert for everyone. Takes a little bit of time but is all worth it. My mom use to make it all the time.

1 tbsp yeast

4 tbsp caster sugar

150 ml warmed milk

225 g plus extra for dusting plain flour

a pinch of salt

50 g melted butter

1 beaten egg

1 vanilla extract

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

3 medium cooking apples, peeled and chopped (1 1/2 cups)

In medium bowl, mix filling ingredients. Set aside.

Mix the yeast with half a teaspoon of the sugar and two tablespoons of the warm milk. Place in a warm place to rest for 15 minutes, or until frothy.  Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Stir in one tablespoon of the sugar. Make a well in the flour and pour in the yeast mix, the rest of the milk, the melted butter, vanilla  and the egg. Mix to make a dough and then knead, cover the bowl and leave to stand for 45 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size.

Grease bottom and sides of 13 x 9″ pan with shortening.

Gently push fist into dough to deflate. Roll dough into 15 x 12″ rectangle. Spread 2 Tbsp softened butter over dough. Cut it in pieces and make the rolls. Fill it with apple sauce.

Heat oven to 400ºF. Bake 20-25 min or until golden brown. Cool in pan 1 min. Place heatproof serving platter or tray upside down onto pan; turn platter and pan over. Let stand about 1 min so caramel can drizzle over rolls; remove pan. Serve warm.

  1. Not at all what I thought Apple Rolls would be, but they look amazing. One question: the recipe lists oil for deep-frying, but the rolls are baked. Did I over look a step or is it a mis-type?
