Homemade pizza with red onion

Pizza with red onion

My kid loves pizza. So almost once a week we have a pizza day.  Sometimes we buy it or other times we make it.  I include my boy when we make the pizza and he can choose the toppings.  This dough recipe is the one we stick with. We tried lots of recipes along the way.  My boy loves red onion so he decided to make one with red onion.

Dough ingredients:

  • 500 g flour
  • 325 ml war water
  • 7 g dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt

You will need flour when you will make it.

Pizza ingredients:

  • 1 sliced red onion
  • Homemade tomato sauce
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Bell peppers
  • Dry spinach

Directions:

Place the warm water in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is dissolved.

In a large bowl place the flour and the salt and mix them. Add the water on top of the flour and start mixing until you have the dough.

Knead the pizza dough for about 7-10 minutes.

The dough should be a little sticky, or tacky to the touch. If it’s too wet, sprinkle in a little more flour. Let it rise in the bowl for 1 hour. Cover the bowl with a towel or plastic wrap.

After the pizza has risen you can start making the pizza. Divide the dough into portions depending on your tray.

Preheat the oven at 245°C or 475°F.

Form round balls of dough. Place each in its own bowl, cover with plastic, and let sit for 15 minutes (or up to 2 hours).

Flatten dough ball, and stretch out into a round: Working one ball of dough at a time, take one ball of dough and flatten it with your hands on a lightly floured work surface. Starting at the center and working outwards, use your fingertips to press the dough to 1/2-inch thick. Turn and stretch the dough until it will not stretch further.

Let the dough relax for 5 minutes and then continue to stretch it until it reaches the desired diameter – 10 to 12 inches.

Spoon on the tomato sauce, sprinkle with cheese, place the onion and red pepper and sprinkle dried spinach on top.

Bake pizza in the 475°F (245°C) oven, one at a time, until the crust is browned and the cheese is golden for about 10-15 minutes.

Enjoy!

  1. One of my favourite toppings is just heaps of capsicum (red, green, and yellow), red onion, and fennel, sliced finely with a mandolin and covered in a protective blanket of cheese 😊

  2. Wonderful. Thin slicing the toppings add to the experience & texture of the pizza. In fact, I made a pizza last night & my guests wondered what was different than the last few times I made it, & I told them I was able to use fresh ingredients that were nearly shaved in their slicing.

  3. I always struggled with the finished pizza dough springing back when trying to stretch it out. Someone told me not to knead it very much. It’s hard not to want to kneed any dough, but when I mixed it and kneaded it to just get everything incorporated and give it an overnight rise, I was pleased to find it very pliable and stretchy without the springiness.

  4. Glad you liked the article Always Garaged. Love your pizza photo, too. One of our favorite crowd-pleasing holiday parties is a Pizza Party Mixer. We hand pick two people who don’t know each other very well. They go into the kitchen where they find Pre-half-baked pizza shells and a series of ingredient bowls. Each decorates their half of the shared-pizza with toppings of their choice. While it is baking to a finish, they get to know each other. We have had great compliments from all party goers.

  5. Why haven’t I thought of red onions on pizza? Good idea! The spinach is weird, but will definitely try
